Bintan is where a significant amount of the seafood in Singapore comes from. This trip brings you to discover the source of our seafood as well as some of the diverse fishing practices used to obtain seafood in the region.
Historically, Bintan and Singapore have deep and strong linkages in terms of heritage and trade. Like stepping through a time portal, Bintan's coastal kampungs mirror what Singapore’s fishing villages would have been like, giving you insights into how villages continue to depend on the oceans. Bintan has preserved these ways of life.
This trip steps into fishing communities of the lesser travelled Bintan Island, outside of the concentrated tourism areas and into villages where communities still very much depend on our marine life to survive.
This trip includes stays at the luxurious The Residence Bintan resort as well as Kelong Pancing Madu Tiga. Throughout this trip we will:
- Meet local communities, including the Orang Suku Laut and understand their way of life
- Learn firsthand about cultural beliefs and practices linked to our marine environment which span over hundreds of years
- Get to know the many different fishing tools used by fishing communities, from kelongs to bubu traps, with demonstrations
- Get to know the diversity of species we eat and better understand the threats they face
